4 Skins - O regresso - Entrevista Abril 2008

Os míticos 4 Skins estão de volta. Para os amantes do Oi! original esta é sem dúvida uma boa notícia. Já começaram a dar concertos para salas cheias, como por exemplo o último Punk & Disordely em Berlim onde actuaram para uma pequena multidão. Já estão programados mais uma série de concertos na Europa e nos E.U.A. Parece que também estão a preparar alguns temas que só serão editados se tiverem grande qualidade. Nota-se que a banda não quer baixar do patamar que atingiu nos anos 80. Muitas das letras dos 4 Skins, como de muitas outras bandas Punk e Oi! originais, eram descritas como rudes e violentas. Não haja dúvida que muitos dos membros dessas bandas e a sua assistência não eram meninos de coro. A verdade é que as letras desses conjuntos descreviam de uma maneira muito fria e realista alguma da realidade do nosso mundo. Fome, guerra, violência, desigualdades abismais, violações, etc são uma realidade para centenas de milhões de seres humanos. Era disso, e não só, que essas bandas falavam, sem grandes floreados, para desespero e inquietação das elites políticas e económicas que nos querem apresentar um mundo cor-de-rosa onde o único mal parte dos simples cidadão, dos trabalhadores, das classes baixas, dos jovens dos subúrbios, mas nunca das suas políticas anti-sociais. O tema Evil, de que aqui deixamos um clip, é um exemplo disso.

Apart from the Cockney Rejects the 4-Skins were the most popular Oi! Band doing the rounds in the early 80’s. Despite having several line up changes the better songs were written by the first line-up of the 4-Skins which included Garry Hodges on vocals. After the Hodges era the band were a bit hit and miss and towards the end were dreadful. After hearing Gary Hodges had reformed the band and seeing various rumours posted on various internet boards and receiving two recently recorded ’Slade’ covers I decided to drop the man an interview and find out what the newly reformed 4-Skins are up to. Here’s what Gary had to say for himself

Street Voice: So why decide to reform the 4-Skins after all this time? I was persuaded to appear on Kings of Street Punk compilation, I thought it would be good for my 11 year old daughter to be involved, after that I started getting offers to gig, which I didn’t really want to do. In the end it was my daughter that talked me into it as she wanted to see me on youtube, and show her friends.

Street Voice: Who’s in the band and who plays what? Vocals=Gary Hodges, Drums= Sedge, Bass= Bacon, Lead= Big Tom

Street Voice: How come the other members of the 4-Skins didn’t want to get back together? GH: Tom McCourt didn’t want to get involved as his job isn’t really compatible with appearing in an Oi band. H wanted to get involved, but as he hadn’t even looked at a guitar in 25 years, let alone played one. He wasn’t able to get up to scratch in time (we literally only had 2 months to get ready for Berlin). John Jacobs has moved on, and I don’t know what has happened to Steve Pear. As far as I’m concerned they are the only ex 4-skins that I would worry about.

Street Voice: I know there’s been some criticism in the UK about the band not having the original line up which must piss you off as I can’t think of one reformed Punk/Oi! Band doing the rounds with its original members? GH: The 4skins had about a dozen different members in its various incarnations, but I started the band with H, the songs we are performing, are the songs that I wrote. We can replicate the 4skin sound, but if people preferred my sound over Panther or Roi, then they can come and see this band that we have put together.

Street Voice: You recently played Germany. I’ve had good and bad reports about how you played but as a band playing its first comeback gig how did you feel it went? GH: It was a great buzz; the place was packed and most seemed to enjoy it. The sound could have been better, but at the end of the day we were playing in a massive warehouse.

Street Voice: So you’ve got the large Oi! Festival and Rebellion to play now so how does it feel to come back to be playing high profile gigs? GH: I’m looking forward to the USA, as I’ve seen the venue and if it’s a sell out it should be really good, and reports from the previous year’s festivals reckon everyone has a great time. Blackpool will be the nuts, we are going up for three days on the piss, and I’ve got a lot of friends coming up for the crack who have never ever seen an Oi! band.

Street Voice: In hindsight though wouldn’t it have been better to play a few warm up gigs to smaller crowds? GH: The problem is getting the venues, and silly as it seems you have less control at the smaller gigs over the crowd. If too many people turned up for the size of venue that would lead to trouble. We would be dead in the water before we’d even started.

Street Voice: Now you’re back playing these high profile gigs do you think that some of the audience you’ve always attracted will keep their right arms down? GH: Let’s hope so; we had none of it in Berlin. Hopefully people have moved on with the passing of the years.

Street Voice: Talking of right armers I used to feel puzzled as when I used to go to Oi! gigs in the 80’s as I couldn’t understand them being there as the things that most bands sung about like Police Oppression etc the Fash were thinking the total opposite. So therefore did it never surprise you that gigs used to get so frequently trashed? GH: Thing is the Right and Left are not too different with most of their views, but a lot of people in the right and left can’t see it, or won’t admit it.

Ed Note: I think Gary is talking about the likes of the SWP and Respect here and he does have a point. Left wing organisations like the IWCA are in tune with the working class as they come from the same estates etc. They know the score.

Street Voice: So now you’re back playing gigs are you writing a new album or just doing it for a few drinks, a laugh and a bit of cash for doing something you enjoy? GH: I’m definitely doing it for the laughs, but H has been penning some lyrics so some new stuff may get released.

Street Voice: If you’re writing new material can we expect something to be released this year? GH: We will have to see what sort of quality the stuff we produce is. I won’t bring anything out just for the sake of it.

Street Voice: How does the Oi! scene of 2008 compare to that of the early 80’s? GH: It’s full of old people.

Street Voice: In between you splitting up and reforming what have you been up to? GH: I had nothing to do with music at all, after doing a couple of years inside for football violence (18 months) and armed robbery (3 years). I kept my head down and concentrated on being with my family.

Street Voice: So who’s the HC beer drinker of the band and have you got any stories to tell regards drunken misbehaviour? GH: We are all t-total

Street Voice: Anything you’d like to add? GH: Thanks for the interest, and this ride is probably going to be short and sweet.

Thanks to Gary for doing the interview and Milky for sorting it out. Nice one! I left out questions about Southall and other incarnations of the 4-skins simply because we’ve all heard the rumours/stories over the years and there was no point in re-visiting them. On the basis of the Slade covers I’ve got by the 4-Skins I hope they go out and release an Album or EP if only just for fun. The Slade tracks were spot on and not blatent copies either. The 4-Skins are back and they’re better than ever!

Rough Kutz - Novo Disco

Os Rough Kutz, banda ska inglesa, acabam de lançar, pela editora Skanky' Lil Records, o seu último trabalho de originais intitulado 'Another Week Another War'. O disco é composto por 14 músicas e contou com a participação, na guitarra, de Roddy Radiation dos The Specials. Skin-Deep - 80’s Oi! & Ska

Hoje recuamos aos anos 80, do século passado, para vos apresentar, recordar, uma banda inglesa, originária de Doncaster, denominada Skin-Deep. Formaram-se em início, meados da década de 80 e praticavam um ska bastante original e particular. Apesar de serem uma banda ska, também se aventuravam pelo Oi!. Alguns fans chegaram-nos a apelidar de Housemartins do Oi! A banda era composta por Wayne Kenyion, Mik Whitnall, Dean Jordan, Andy State. Após o fim dos Skin-Deep, o vocalista Wayne criou os The Ferrymen, e Mick Whitnall integrou várias bandas, entre as quais destacamos os 100 Men.

A nível discográfico a herança dos Skin-Deep é escassa. Editaram, pela Skank Records, em 1988, um LP de originais, com o título de ‘More Than Skin-Deep’. Os dois temas aqui apresentados em vídeo, foram retirados deste disco. Anos mais tarde este trabalho. foi reeditado em formato Split CD, em conjunto com os The Burial.

Apesar de só terem editado um álbum de originais, participaram em mais de uma dezena de compilações com alguns temas inéditos e outros retirados do trabalho atrás referido. Uma das colectâneas mais ‘famosa’ a receber um tema seu foi o LP ‘Oi! The Resurrection’, editado pela Link Records.

Concrete Jungle - Festival Punk Oi!

Ora ai está mais um grande festival. Concrete Jungle - 3 Day Punk Festival é o nome escolhido para uma grande reunião de bandas Punk- Oi!

O festival realiza-se entre os dias 20 e 22 de Abril de 2007. Os interessados têm quase seis meses para se organizarem para irem a Inglaterra.

Até ao momento já estão confirmadas as seguintes bandas: The Exploited, Cockney Rejects, Anti-Nowhere League, Discharge, The Business, Chelsea, The Crack, Last Resort, Peter and the Test Tube Babies, G.B.H., U.K. Subs, 999, The Lurkers, Abrasive Wheels, The Riffs, Deadline, Argy Bargy, Goldblade, Perkele, Resistance 77, Section 5, Vice Squad, Foreign Legion, Picture Frame Seduction, Demob, Guns on the Roof, Neville Staples, The Beat. E o cartaz ainda não está fechado...

A seguir aos concertos a festa não acaba. A noite continua com dj's a bombar Northern Soul e Ska.

Londres 2002- Desmond Dekker, The Vibrators & outros...

Esta review-artigo já tem uns anitos, mas não deixa de ser interessante. A ambiência de Londres, os seus concertos, as lojas, os mercados, punks, skins, mods, os pubs…são sempre coisas que qualquer um de nós espera encontrar na capital Inglesa.

Passado um ano após a minha primeira visita a Londres, aquando do Festival Hollidays in the Smoke, voltei para mais uma vez ver ao vivo lendas vivas do ska e do punk-rock . A acompanhar-me foi o Rui, que já algumas semanas antes tinha ido comigo a Vigo ver Oxymoron, The Belltones e Pistol Grip!!

Partimos de Lisboa uma quinta-feira, dia 31/11/2002. O avião devia partir às 08h45, mas o sistema do aeroporto foi abaixo e houve um atraso de 2 horas mais ou menos... só não ficámos uma eternidade na fila para o check-in porque entretanto vi uma amiga minha que trabalha na TAP e nos despachou a mala. Sabem como é que é, os VIPS têm sempre estes conhecimentos... eheh! Chegámos a Londres já depois da hora do almoço, onde estavam à espera a minha namorada e uma amiga do Rui (gostas pouco gostas...), entretanto eu e o Rui ficámos sem contacto até sábado... eheh...

Carnaby Street - Londres

Na sexta fui até Carnaby Street começar a desgraça nas lojas clássicas (Cherry, Merc, Lonsdale, etc). Já ao final do dia, um cota veio ter comigo e a Teresa, perguntando se queríamos entrar num filme! O cromo estava a preparar um filme chamado “Football Factory” e precisava de pessoal skinhead, rude boy e afins para participar na filmagens... tudo à pala da minha camisola da Trojan (até o gajo da Merc perguntou onde é que comprei a camisola). Entretanto disse para aparecermos no concerto que estava a organizar no dia seguinte, quando perguntámos o que era nem queríamos acreditar... o gajo estava a organizar o concerto de Desmond Dekker and the Aces! Ainda lhe cravei uns bilhetes mas o cabrão não nos deu nada (deu-nos o poster e já gozámos), mas comprámos logo os bilhetes para nós e o Rui e ficámos a saber onde era a sala.

Carnaby Street (Anos 60)

Sábado de manhã lá conseguimos falar com o Rui e a Rita e fomos todos ao mercado de Portobello Road, onde continuámos o descalabro financeiro, desta vez com algum vinil e com uns sapatinhos Doc Marteens novos para o Rui. Depois... fomos para o Pub, claro! Guiness e mais 10 pontos carecas...

Laurel Aitken ao vivo no Club Ska - Londres

Chegou então a grande noite de 02 de Novembro de 2002, o concerto de Desmond Dekker! O sítio do concerto era um bocado longe, a norte de Londres, no The Rayners em Rayners Lane (Harrow). Quando chegámos ao sítio do concerto ficámos à toa porque não vimos logo a sala do concerto mas sim um género de Pub onde já estavam alguns grupos de carecas. Afinal a entrada era do outro lado do edifício e à porta lá estava o cromo do filme que nos reconheceu de imediato. Entrámos e ficámos abismados, um salão com decoração mesmo à antiga com umas mesas no final do salão e um toaster a meter som... parecia que estávamos numa festa ska em plenos anos 60! Por cima do palco uma grande faixa do Club Ska (que organizou o concerto).

A assistência, apenas entre 150 a 200 pessoas, era composta maioritariamente por skinheads com idades para cima dos 30 e 40 anos, alguns cotas mais casuals e um ou outro rude boy. Éramos quase de certeza as pessoas mais novas no concerto! Entretanto (e após algumas idas ao bar) o bacano que estava a organizar o concerto foi ao palco para fazer uma breve introdução e apresentação do Desmond Dekker, aproveitando para apresentar o grupo de portugueses que estava presente! Somos os maiores... Lá subiram então ao palco Desmond Decker and the Aces, proporcionando uma noite cheia de Ska, Rocksteady e Reggae! Foram tocadas pérolas como 007, Ah it Mek, Sabotage, You’ve got your troubles, Unity, etc... Houve tempo para tudo, até para uma versão super acelarada de King of the Ska! Para o encore ficaram mais 2 clássicos: You can get it if you really want (a música oferecida por Jimmy Cliff quando este se dedicou ao Soul) e Israelites.

O som estava excelente e Desmond Dekker foi acompanhado por uns The Aces bastante competentes compostos por um gutarrista, um baterista, um baixista, um teclas, um percussionista e um gajo que não percebi muito bem o que é que estava lá a fazer ( de vez em quando cantava umas merdas ou puxava pelo público). A voz de Desmond continua um must, fazendo por diversas vezes solos com a voz, principalmente em falsete, que o caracteriza. Foi uma hora e tal de suor e dança entre tatuagens do West Ham Utd...

Desmond Dekker - Ao vivo no Club Ska - 2002

No dia seguinte o Rui regressou a Portugal, mas eu ainda iria ficar mais uma semana.
Na segunda-feira fui ter com o Pedro a Camnden Town, ao Elephant, o pub onde pára a mitra toda... juntou-se uma turma engraçada, incluindo o Biff de Varukers, pessoal de Sick on the Bus, o Vitor de Parkinsons, etc... Após alguns litros de Guiness e de combinarmos a tour de Varukers e Albert Fish em Portugal lá voltei para casa já a altas horas. Não me lembro muito bem como é que consegui encontrar o caminho de volta, mas lá cheguei inteiro!

Na quarta fomos até ao Mean Fiddler W1, onde vimos um concerto com 4 bandas Hardcore, em que os cabeça de cartaz eram os Strung Out que estavam na sua tour de apresentação do novo álbum: An American Paradox. Engraçado foi ver o Big Jay dos Bastards a distrubuir autocolantes de Lars Frederiksen and The Bastards...

No dia seguinte estava com uma dor de cabeça do caraças, por isso não fui ver o concerto dos The Restarts.
Chegou sexta-feira, dia 08 e dia de mais um grande concerto, desta vez os The Vibrators! Mais uma vez uma aventura para encontrar a sala que mais uma vez era nas traseiras de um Pub. A sala era a Wolfie’s Jukebox em Castle, relativamente pequena e com slides dos The Clash e dos Pistols na parede. Antes de Vibrators tocaram duas bandas, uma um bocado má que me fazia lembrar grunge e outra bué boa que era uma mistura de New York Dolls com Placebo! O público era na sua grande parte punks quarentões que pararam no tempo, mais propriamente em 77, o que os torna uma beca ridículos porque o cabedal já não combina muito com o tamanho actual das barrigas... enfim. Encontrámos também uma rapariga de Portugal e uns brasileiros que estavam com ela. O concerto de Vibrators foi excelente começando com Auto Fading e avançando para Kid, Slave, Tired, Troops of Tomorrow (tema imortalizado pelos Exploited), o grande hino Baby Baby, Sex Kick, Disco, Judy, etc... no encore trouxeram-nos Yeah Yeah Yeah acabando em beleza! No final veio falar comigo um skinhead polaco que já me tinha visto no Metro... gajo à maneira (claro que isto não vos interessa nada, mas lembrei-me).

Punk a fazer publicidade a botas em Camden Town

No dia seguinte havia concerto de Eddie and the Hot Rods, mas infelismente não tive oportunidade de ir ver o circo....Apanhei o avião de regresso na manhã de domingo, dia 10. O avião partia bastante cedo, por isso tive que apanhar um táxi para chegar a horas do check-in. Quando cheguei ao balcão dizem-me que o meu bilhete foi cancelado! Lá tive que explicar que no dia do meu voo o sistema berrou, mas que confirmei o voo quando cheguei a Londres. Nada de mais e um regresso calmo até Portugal onde cheguei ainda de manhã...

Um clássico do Oi! / Punk. A banda era composta por dois skins e dois punks. Juntos fizeram este excelente 7'' com um Oi! / Punk muito própio. Este foi o primeiro trabalho dos Blitz. Se ainda não ouviste este disco tens agora a oportunidade de o fazer. Não te vais arrepender!
